If you haven’t heard of Staxx, then you are probably living under a rock! Staxx took over from where Dave Foxx left off.

Staxx is a good friend of mine and we’ve had the chance to hang out on a number of occasions, including my most recent trip to New York City.

His passion for the industry is unparalleled, his creativity is amazing and he is also a really cool guy.

So, what is it like to be Creative Services Director for the most famous Radio Station in the world? Take it away – Staxx!

1. In 2018, what do you think is more important - creativity or technical ability (or both)

I think creative skills are the more important of the two.  I don’t just mean writing or concepts, my favorites, but being creative in how you use your tools as well.  Technical skills for can be learned by almost anyone that has a data plan and YouTube account.  Having a unique, honest, and creative take on your work will set you apart from the pack!  I don’t mean to say that creativity cannot also be taught, but it’s a little trickier and probably requires more self discovery than the traditional teaching/learning methodology.

2. What was the best tip you know now, that’d you wish you knew when starting out?

To believe in yourself and your ideas and your gut immediately.  It really sucks when you hear someone do an idea that you maybe had too…but they had to gumption to go for it, finesse it, and ship it.

3. Imaging is like Music and styles/techniques are always changing. How do you see the imaging world in the next 5-10 years? (Less zips zaps? / more sonic branding? / simplified? / bigger?)

I think radio imaging will always follow the tone of the music the brand caters to.  Ultimately, it’s going to depend on who’s in charge in those next 5-10 years.  I do think that as more and more data algorithms and research on people’s habits become available, that will teach us to more effectively nurture our relationship with the people who consume these brands.

Z100 / FM104 Collaboration

It was great to hang with Staxx in New York City back in June. We made some cool audio and talked nerdy plugin stuff for hours! That’s how it’s done! Then, we go and visit and Irish Bar with Bryan Apple!
